THE STABILIZING ZENER

The experiment suggested through the outline of figure 5 must begin with the cursor of potentiometer the R2 completely rotated towards the line of negative feeding to 9 V, so that diode  zener DZ remains shorted and the voltage, on its terminals, is of 0 V.

Fig. 5 - Through this simple circuit he is easy to interpret the behavior of a diode  zener correctly inserted in the outline, with polarization invert.

Components:

R1 = 100 ohm;

R2 = 470 ohm (potenz. variaz. línear.);

DZ = diode  zener (5,6 V - 1 W).

Therefore it is begun to slowly rotate the hinge of R2 towards the R1 resistance, that is towards the positive clip of the local p0wer source and the behavior of the index of the tester is observed, that it must commutated in the function of voltmeter for d.c. voltages and on the 25 V deep-scale. One will also notice to us that the voltage knows them from the zero begins them until catching up the value of 5,6 V. From which more does not bear away, continuing to speed up in its race the cursor of R2. And this is the effect provoked from diode  zener DZ, for which a model with voltage zener of 5,6 V has been chosen obviously.

Fig. 6 - Practical outline of the demonstrative experiment of the behavior of a diode  zener inversely polarized. It aims them positive of the tester goes connected with finishes centers them them of potentiometer the R2 (cursor) .

In the practical current, replacing the tester with a loaded electrical worker, this it would come constantly fed with the voltage of 5,6 V, also assuming that one of feeding the value of 9 V maximums and being able also to vary in the time (maneuvers on the potentiometer).

If the diode  zener comes inserted in the same circuit of figure 5 with directed polarization, like marked in the outline electrical worker of figure 7, the semiconductor is behaved like a whichever diode , that is in the way already analyzed in the outline of figure 1, in which the voltage remains stabilized on the value of 0,7 V.

Fig. 7 - In this circuit, in which the diode  zener is inserted with direct polarization, that is with the anode turned towards the line of the positive voltage and the cathode towards that negative, the semiconductor is behaved as a silicon diode.
